The duties of a family counselor can be different depending on the type of counseling they do. Counseling may take place in person, by phone, or through video chat. There are many types of counseling such as individual, couples, and group therapy. The type that is best for you will depend on your situation and needs. 

What is a family counselor?

A “counselor,” also known as a “therapist,” helps people cope with and solve their problems. Family counselors help families, friends, and couples work through stressful or emotional issues that they may be experiencing together. The main responsibilities of a family therapist are to listen, provide support, educate individuals about themselves and relationships, and help clients find new perspectives on situations (Career Step). 

Qualifications for being a Family Counselor

  • A degree in psychology, social work, or a related field 
  • Licensed as a therapist in the state where they will be practicing 
  • At least two years of experience working with families dealing with difficult issues 
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of family therapy and child development 
  • Strong verbal and writing skills 
  • Excellent listening skills in order to understand what the family is really trying to say, beneath the surface

Job Description in Family Counseling 

A family counselor’s job description includes: 

  • Assessing a family’s needs, strengths, and weaknesses in order to develop a treatment plan designed specifically for them. This may include one on one sessions between the client/family members, group therapy sessions with other families dealing with similar issues, or counseling held outside of an office setting at their home or school. The counselor must design treatment plans that are effective while also being affordable for clients. The effectiveness of these plans is evaluated through ongoing assessments. 
  • Providing individual, family, and group counseling sessions that meet the specific needs of the family being treated 
  • Meeting with families in schools, hospitals, or community centers to provide outreach services to those who do not have access to a counselor near their homes 
  • Working toward prevention by planning workshops for parents and children on topics such as self esteem building and coping skills 
  • Offering support groups for people dealing with certain issues such as single parenting or grief counseling 
  • Conducting training and consultations for businesses or other organizations whose employees might be in need of resources in order to resolve marital problems or parent/child conflicts at work.  

Average Salary and Wages 

The average salary for a family counselor in the United States is $42,000 per year. Employment of counselors is expected to increase by 22 percent from 2010-2020 which is higher than the national average of 14 percent. This means that there will be plenty of employment opportunities available in this field. Despite this, competition will still exist since not enough people are going into this profession at this time. 


In conclusion, the duties of a family counselor include listening to their clients and providing them with guidance based on research. In addition, counselors should be able to offer empathy for those they are working with in order to help reduce any stress or anxiety that may exist. Family counselors also need to have an excellent grasp of the latest psychological theories and methods regarding counseling individuals from all walks of life.
