What is overweight? Being overweight is a condition where a person has more body fat than what is considered healthy for an individual. This condition is often associated with unhealthy eating lifestyle and lack of exercise. Most obese individuals live in areas where food supplies are plenty and people spends much of their time sitting. Being overweight has reached frightening numbers where it almost become a global epidemic: as of 2003, more than one billion adults have been reported as overweight or obese.
What Causes Being Overweight?
There are many factors that contribute to weight gain. It can be because of the kind of environment where an individual is. Gaining weight is also associated with lack of exercise and unhealthy eating habits. Being overweight can also be genetic. Whenever a person eats more calories and does less activities, a person is likely to be obese. That is why burning of calories through exercise is essential for maintaining weight. If a person eats too much and does less, gaining weight comes next.
Having a busy lifestyle can also lead to being overweight as it causes a person to eat more and move less. Those who work in the office are more likely to become overweight than those who work in areas where lots of physical activities are done such as at construction sites, gyms, and hospitals. The health condition of an individual can also be a factor for becoming obese due to medications and certain conditions such having an underactive thyroid or suffering in polycystic ovary syndrome.
Stress can also be a cause of being overweight. This is because there are people that are likely to eat more than what they are used to due to stress. Emotions can also trigger unhealthy eating habits as some people eat more than usual when they are upset, angry, bored etc. Due to a roller coaster of emotions and stress, this can also lead to sleeplessness or having inadequate sleep. Having a poor sleep can also lead to weight gain as it causes the body’s metabolism to slow down which causes the body to store more fats that should have been converted into energy.
What Are the Risks of Excessive Weight?
Being obese means that there are more fats stored in the body than usual which can lead to certain diseases. It can cause serious impacts on a person’s health. People who are obese often suffer from medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, certain types of cancers, and arthritis. Being obese also leads to having a fatty liver, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, kidney disease and more.
While there is time, people who are obese must act before further health complications appear. People must learn how to eat healthily and live healthily. Being overweight is no joke. Obese people may have been made fun of, but their health condition is at risk. Do something before it’s too late. You may have members who are overweight, or you may be overweight yourself.
